My son played his first soccer match and scored a goal this week.

His body danced, wiggled, and radiated joy as he navigated this new game. From the bottoms of his cleats to the tips of his curly hair – he was ALIVE.

As I watched him, I found myself reflecting on all the major firsts in my life.

Stepping on the plane to come study in the US, leaving family and friends behind with a suitcase in hand, and the open vastness of New Mexico awaiting me. No guarantees or assurances of what the future would bring, but knowing I had to meet it just the same.

My first time speaking on my own radio show.

Giving birth to my son.

My first experience of death.

There are so many firsts over the course of our lives. Some that slam through our systems and stay in our minds, whilst others we catch in meditations and heartbeats.

What makes us pursue these fresh firsts, and new experiences?

What stirs the craziness and excitement within us to propel us forward, toward new horizons? Where does it come from, that specific, niggling determination that tells us not to wait for the conditions to be right, or the bank balance to be perfect or for people to understand?

It can begin as curiosity, or confusion, feeling disconnected or dispirited. Whatever the root cause –  it calls us to attention.

This calling resides in each one of us, rippling outward like waves of deep resonant knowing. It asks us to speak truth, to rise, and be loved. It nourishes us, massages our hearts, and fulfills our collective purposes (known and unknown to us) in a 1000 different ways.

Do you want to listen in, and see what is calling to you?
Try this exercise.

1. Take a few deep breath and close your eyes.

2. Allow your being to quieten down and turn your attention inward.

3. Ask your inner voice, Higher Self, intuition to tell you what is calling you in your life now.

4. Listen. Be patient. Ask the question again and again. Pay attention to your feelings as they begin to stir. They are clues for you to follow.

Is there a yearning for more wakefulness or adventure? Is there a feeling of wanting to break out of routine and catch some excitement? Do you sense a quietude wanting to spread its wings in your being? Marriage? More abundance?

5. Listen deeply. Follow your feelings and see where they take you in your mind.

6. After you come out of your meditation, write down everything that you felt in detail. Own it. Examine it. And then, ask yourself: “What do I need to take this leap of faith, and make it happen?”

Dare to be the one who risks. Dare to be the one who leaps. Dare to be the one who listens to the drummer within.

And now, I turn to you.

What are some firsts that stand out in your memory?
